Snorkeling Etiquette: Protect the Reef While You Explore
Keep coral healthy by floating, following the guide and never touching or removing marine life.

Snorkeling is most memorable when the reef remains undisturbed. Catalina and other coastal sites offer clear water and marine habitat that deserve more than a quick photo.
Float and observe
Keep your body horizontal, maintain distance from coral and avoid standing on the seabed. Fins can damage reef structures even when the contact feels light. Follow the guide’s route and use flotation support if you are not a confident swimmer.
Never collect shells, coral or animals, and do not feed fish. Sunscreen and other products can affect marine environments; use a reef-conscious option and follow the advice given by your operator or protected-area staff.
Choose good guidance
Before booking, ask whether gear is included, what the group size is and how the guide handles guests who are new to snorkeling. A clear safety briefing helps everyone enjoy the water without crowding or chasing marine life.
Conditions can change with current, wind and visibility. Stay within the designated area and return to the boat when the crew signals.
Consejos rápidos para planificar
- Do not touch coral or stand on the reef.
- Use a flotation aid and stay with the guide if you are inexperienced.
- Never feed, chase or remove marine animals.
