Bahía de las Águilas: Make the Southwest the Destination

This remote protected beach rewards travelers who plan transportation, water and shade before leaving for the southwest.

Bahía de las Águilas is part of Jaragua National Park and is known for a long, undeveloped coastline. Reaching it is part of the experience, so the southwest deserves its own trip plan.

Go prepared for a remote shoreline

The official tourism page notes that the beach has no hotels, shops or restaurants and very little shade. Bring water, sun protection and everything your group needs for the outing, then take all rubbish back with you.

Access is described by boat from Cabo Rojo or by suitable all-terrain vehicle. Confirm the permitted route with a local operator and follow protected-area rules. Do not assume that a regular rental car can reach the shore or that the same access is available every day.

Give Pedernales enough time

Pedernales is in the far southwest, several hours from Santo Domingo according to the official destination guide. A rushed day from an eastern resort may leave little time on the coast. Consider a multi-day stay to include Laguna de Oviedo, Jaragua landscapes and local communities without turning the trip into a long drive alone.

The beach is beautiful because it remains relatively wild. Keep a light footprint: stay on established access, do not remove shells or plants, and leave the place as you found it.

Consejos rápidos para planificar

  • Confirm access method and road conditions with a local operator.
  • Bring water, sun protection and supplies because services are limited.
  • Plan an overnight stay rather than stacking the beach onto a long cross-country day.
